The Generalitat de Catalunya has recognized the excellence of professors Olga Alcaráz and Barbara Sureda, who are part of the team working on the project “Engineering Education for a Sustainable Future: Addressing Environmental Challenges”.

The project, which involves the schools of Industrial, Aerospace and Design Engineering (EEBE) and Civil Engineering (ETSECCPB) of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), has as its main objective to train future engineers in a perspective of sustainability and critical thinking. Through various activities, such as classroom discussions, the creation of an awareness-raising video and the organization of a multidisciplinary conference, the project seeks to foster a deep understanding of current environmental challenges and promote the development of innovative solutions.

With a global vision, the project addresses eleven of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, demonstrating its ability to transform higher education. By integrating itself into the teaching-learning processes, it seeks to train professionals who are aware of and prepared to face the environmental challenges of the future. Designed primarily for engineering students, the project finds fertile ground in subjects such as natural resource management, life cycle analysis and energy sustainability, where discussions encourage critical thinking and the search for sustainable solutions. Its adaptable methodology makes it extensible to other educational levels and disciplines, demonstrating its potential to generate a lasting impact on society.

Although initially, it will be implemented at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, it has the capacity to be scalable and adaptable, allowing its application in other universities and academic contexts. The discussion methodology is fully exportable, and both the awareness-raising video and the conference talks are accessible online, facilitating the dissemination and adoption of the project in other institutions.

With this award, the Generalitat de Catalunya recognizes the work of Olga Alcaráz and Barbara Sureda, as well as the entire team, and reaffirms its commitment to the training of professionals committed to sustainable development.
