Discover our Master in Sustainability Science and Technologies and its opportunities to be part of the change!
Mar 20, 2024
For more than ten years, ISST has been offering undergraduate students the possibility to be trained as experts in sustainability with the Master in Sustainability Science and Technologies (MCTS).
The MCTS proposes an interdisciplinary training to understand the complexity of the interactions between society, economy and the environment, and it applies scientific-technical tools to address the challenges of sustainable development. The MCTS is taught in person at the Campus Nordof the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) within 2 academic years, with the possibility of doing it part-time in 4 years and combining it with work.
The program has a transdisciplinary approach towards the design, evaluation and application of technology, data management, ecological urbanism, social research and biodiversity, among others, and prepares the student to develop sustainable solutions. During the course, students carry out various activities related to the educational program, such as field visits to learn about initiatives and actions of sustainable development, as well as strategies of adaptation to climate change. This year, the students have been able to participate in an International Urban Mining Conference to learn to address the complexity of the management of electronic waste and the scarcity of minerals necessary for its production. In addition, on a regular basis, experts form various fields of sustainability were regularly invited in conference or class to present the results of their latest research (for example, the conference by Yayo Herrero: "Introduction to ecofemenism and to the feminist economy" in 2020).
Another opportunity that the MCTS offers is to participate in the Erasmus program. From the third semester onwards, students can experience international mobility at other prestigious universities: the Chalmers University of Technology and the Royal Institute of Technology, in Sweden; the KTH - University of Applied Sciences, in Germany; the NHL-Stendel University of Applied Science, in the Netherlands; and the Norwegian University of Science, in Norway.
Students also have the opportunity to attend national and international conferences such as the CONAMA, or the United Nations Climate Conferences(we have participated in COP26, COP27 and COP28), where some students even have presented their TFM results. The ISST also organizes two extracurricular programs to complete the training of the Master: the Summer School on Transdisciplinary Methods, in the Alt Empordà, Spain (Open registrations until April 30, 2024); and the Blended Intensive Program on Circular Economyin Porto, Portugal.
During the fourth semester, students have to deliver a Master's Final Project (TFM). This work can be carried out in collaboration with prestigious organizations such as The Barcelona Supercomputing Center-Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS), the Andorran Sustainability Observatory (OBSA), the Globalisation Debt Observatory (OdG), or within ISST research projects on topics such as circular economy, climate change, sustainable design, energy transition, urban resilience and green infrastructure. Some examples can be seen on the UPCommons website.
This master's degree offers good professional opportunities, since in the end, 93% of graduates have found an employment. The outings are varied, such as: the design and management of sustainable processes and projects; management, consultation and production, as well as the formulation and evaluation of sustainable policies and strategies in public and private research centers, non-governmental organizations and companies and national/international public institutions related to the territory, the environment and sustainable development. It can also represent the beginning of the research career in sustainability sciences and technologies through the direct access to the program of PhD in Sustainability at UPC.
Therefore, if you want to train to become an agent of change, the registrations for the 24-25 course of our Master in Sustainability Science and Technologies are already open! If you want more information or want to get in touch with the master's degree teachers, we recommend that you sign up for one of the online information meetings we have scheduled for the coming months.
